  • The red fish shack is called motif #1, and is usually photographed or painted from another angle off to the left of where I'm standing, but this shows the harbor inside the breakwater on the same day...considerably calmer than out in the open water.

  • Also Rockport, Mass. (same day). Water in foreground has filled an inactive granite quarry, Whitecaps beyond are in the Atlantic. Granite quarried at Rockport was used in construction of buildings all over the country. This area is part of Halibut Point State Park...a very cool spot. Instead of any sort of beach, there are huge slabs of granite the size of cars and larger strewn along the coastline....byproducts of quarrying days gone by.

  • This is the Nubble Lighthouse at Cape Neddick, ME. It's on a small island maybe 100 yards off the coast. No public access, but staff access is via a little car that traverses a cable and pulley over to the light...see the poles & small white car on the left of photo. How'd you like to be in that in a winter storm?

  • A cruise ship heading out of NY harbor towards the Atlantic. The tall building near the center of the frame is the new One World Trade in Lower Manhattan seen across Lower New York Harbor/Raritan Bay. Both of these taken from Sandy Hook, part of Gateway National Recreation Area. There are many decommissioned former coastal defense batteries here as well as a former Nike Missile base. No longer active, of course, but they still have missiles, launchers, and mobile control stations that are sometimes open for tours as are some of the batteries. Sandy Hook is also a major flyway for migratory birds and monarch butterflies. A very unique & beautiful natural place in sight of it's exact opposite.
